The robot uprising inched a little closer yesterday.

In a new video posted Tuesday by US engineering firm Boston Dynamics, the latest version of the Atlas robot shows off an impressive array of skills. It walks over uneven terrain in the snowy woods, lifts ten pound boxes onto shelves, and picks itself up when it falls.

The is designed to handle tough outdoor terrain. It was originally created to compete in 顿础搁笔础鈥檚 Robotics Challenge, a US competition to test how robots might fare in dangerous emergency situations.

Yesterday鈥檚 video has impressed for its quieter and smoother motions鈥攂ut also left a few unsettled. Another Boston Dynamics video, released a little over a year ago, made some viewers uncomfortable with its footage of an employee kicking a dog-like robot named Spot. The trend continues with this week鈥檚 Atlas vid: someone knocks boxes out of robot鈥檚 hands with a hockey stick, and later pushes it to the ground.
