Rembrandt

Faking Rembrandt

, this painting of a man in his 30s or 40s bears all the hallmarks of a Dutch master 鈥 apart from the fact that the thickly layered brushstrokes were squirted out by a 3D printer. A machine learning system built by Microsoft, in collaboration with Delft University of Technology and two art museums in the Netherlands, analysed dozens of Rembrandt鈥檚 portraits until it could perfectly mimic the painter鈥檚 style.

Fondling robots

. A team at Stanford University in California got a humanoid Nao robot to ask male and female volunteers to touch it. When touching areas corresponding to buttocks or genitals, the volunteers showed physiological signs of arousal. 鈥淚t shows that people respond to robots in a primitive, social way,鈥 says team leader Jami Li, and that 鈥渃onventions regarding touching someone else鈥檚 private parts apply to a robot鈥檚 body parts as well鈥.
