AI takes the tube

Visitors sometimes have trouble navigating the London Underground system, but an AI trained by Google鈥檚 DeepMind has learned to plot the best route. A chimera of traditional computers and neural networks, DeepMind is able to tackle tasks that require it to handle sequences, while remembering and reusing what it learns as it goes. This lets it find the shortest route from A to B through London鈥檚 tangle of stations (Nature, ).

One of 68 default login details used by a piece of software called Mirai to hijack poorly secured devices. The hacker who released the code for Mirai last week claimed they could take control of 380,000 devices with these credentials, using the devices to attack other parts of the internet with a flood of traffic.

Baby-bot melts hearts

Not a fan of babies? A cute teacup-sized robot called Kirobo Mini, which was released by Toyota last week, might just soften you up. 鈥淗e wobbles a bit, and this is meant to emulate a seated baby,鈥 Fuminori Kataoka, Kirobo Mini鈥檚 chief design engineer, told Reuters. 鈥淭his vulnerability is meant to invoke an emotional connection.鈥
