Donovan (Letters, 20 March) suggests that ‘marine dinosaurs’ were
smaller than modern whales because they had to lay their eggs on land. In
fact, none of the marine reptiles were dinosaurs and some of them, the ichthyosaurs,
gave birth to live young. Perhaps the difference in maximum sizes between
these animals and the whales has more to do with diet. Most of the largest
whales are plankton-eaters, unlike the extinct reptiles.
