One sighting of a poisonous woodlouse spider, and Frank Rickett (Letters,
13 March) is off to the local entomologist and bewailing the lack of free
fumigation services from the local council.

No self-respecting Aussie goes home without a few redback spiders, poisonous
enough to see off any of James Bond’s black widows. The better suburbs breed
a meaner critter, the trapdoor spider. Some grow large enough to gobble
up the occasional small bird, hence the affectionate name of bird-eating
spider. No free fumigation needed here. Just big boots.

What a bunch of wimps.
