way they are selected. Here at Cambridge, contributions to teaching are
regarded as being, if anything, somewhat reprehensible. Since promotion
is based entirely on research, and there are only a finite number of hours
in a day, the result is inevitable. However, by a curious – but fortunate
– irony, one of the main duties imposed on professors by the university
is to limit their teaching hours; thus poor teachers are additionally rewarded
by being excused from doing it at all.
